Heatherwick Studio

Developing new, custom luminaires and refurbishing existing pieces
~ Kings Cross, London ~

Heatherwick Studio, the national, multi-award winning British architecture firm has moved into the former Diesel HQ in central London. The studio focuses on large-scale projects in cities cities acreoss the globe, driven by the human experience and positive social impact of the spaces created.

Lighting design studio Light Bureau appointed Eulum Design to create a custom pendant luminaire, designed according to the vision of Thomas Heatherwick. This design featured many non-conventional aspects, such as invisible ceiling fixings and power lines. After perfecting the design, we created renders and functional prototypes for client demonstration and testing of the photometric and thermal properties of the pendants.

In addition to the custom luminaire development, Eulum was selected to refurbish the existing track mounted spotlights and high-bays.

These fixtures were brought to our facility and carefully disassembled piece by piece. Each piece was cleaned and evaluated for suitability, allowing us to repurpose as many of the original components as possible. These luminaires were updated with modern, tuneable white LEDs and efficient optical systems, then upgraded with On-Board Casambi wireless control.

Through these refurbishments, Eulum was able to not only retain the retro styling of the space, but employ the circular economy to keep these fixtures away from the scrap heap.

This project demonstrates the creative vision of the architects and lighting designers, while highlighting Eulum’s ability to create beautiful, custom luminaires and renew existing fittings without losing their character.
