Conversion of a stunningly-complex prop into a unique chandelier

The Quantum Computer is a one-of-a-kind prob inspired by a real, IBM quantum computer for the television series Devs, produced by FX and Hulu. The show centres around an extremely powerful quantum computer that surpasses the abilities of real-world computers, and uses this premise to explore themes of quantum physics, technology and free will.
British television presenter Hannah Fry was so enthused with the piece that she decided to acquire the prop from the studio, to be hung in her home as a showpiece ‘chandelier’. The prop, however, was not designed to be either illuminated in this manner, nor suspended. Consequently, specialist remodelling would be required to make this vision a reality. To solve this, lighting design studio Light Bureau brought Eulum on board.
Eulum Design supported the project from the initial design through mock-ups, remanufacture and installation. A bespoke suspension system was designed to hold the half-tonne luminaire securely, whilst doubling as a vital artery to hide wiring. Eulum’s Casambi-Enabled NDRV wireless lighting controllers were used to allow for full control over every LED on the luminaire, which comprised on numerous, discreet spotlights and illuminated panels. Finally, a Eulum Arcane spotlight, featuring a liquid-crystal beam shaping optic, was installed into the bottom of the fixture, neatly illuminating the living space below.
The result is a striking vertical sculpture of gold and copper, a shifting chandelier pulsing dazzling light onto the surrounding walls in shades of silver and gold. This artwork of engineering has been brought to life by the combined efforts of Light Bureau and Eulum Design, creating a unique focal point for it’s new home.
Though this quickly became the most painstakingly complicated, single fixture Eulum Design has ever made, it is also one we are most proud of. We’d like to once again thank both Light Bureau and Hannah for entrusting us with this most memorable proect.
